A PAIR OF SMALL ZULU TRIBAL RAW-HIDE 'COURTING' SHIELDS, both of standard oval form, 1) circa early 20th Century, brown and white, 24in. x 14 1/2in., attached to a wooden stave with raw leather loops, stave with cow-tail finial, little hair remaining on face of shield and stave shortened, 37in. overall; 2) circa mid 20th Century, black and white 28in. x 16in. shield loops intact but attached to a replacement black-painted wooden stave with modern plastic loops, 40in. overall, these shields were miniature war-shields traditionally made from hide off-cuts and used by young men when calling on girlfriends
